I'm a computer science professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where I explore issues in file and storage systems and, more generally, distributed systems and operating systems. My current projects include archival storage systems, scalable file system indexing, file systems for next-generation storage technologies, file system security, and petabyte-scale storage systems. I'm also interested in storage system benchmarks, algorithms to more efficiently manage storage, and information retrieval from very large text and multimedia corpora as well as other problems in computer systems and security.
I'm also a consultant on issues relating to storage systems, including advanced storage system research, storage system design and intellectual property & patents. I'm currently working with Pure Storage to help them provide an high-performance all-flash storage array to handle the most demanding enterprise applications.
